smartcity cologne. projects for a modern & sustainable city.
SmartCity Cologne is a platform for climate protection and renewable energy projects. Anyone can participate, including private individuals, companies, associations and initiatives. Together, participants develop intelligent ideas and forward-looking technologies that make Cologne an even better place to live. In 2011, the City of Cologne and the local energy provider Rhein-Energie AG launched the Smart-City Cologne (SCC) initiative.
SCC networks participants and their activities in order to promote climate protection, energy efficiency and innovation. By exploiting the opportunities offered by digitalisation and promoting innovation, the SCC initiative is making a major contribution to the sustainable development of renewable energy and transport in Cologne – where smart cooperation, climate protection and innovation can be lived, seen and experienced firsthand.
The smart measures taking place under the SCC umbrella, such as the GrowSmarter and Klimastraße projects, provide concrete examples of this. SmartCity Cologne generates technical innovations like BIM and digitalisation as well as social innovations such as multigeneration living and sharing concepts. SCC is active across all sectors and takes a holistic approach to Cologne’s neighbourhoods.
Example: “Klimastraße” (Climate Street) in the Nippes-district
Neusser Straße in Cologne’s district Nippes shows what a future SmartCity could look like, because a section of the street becomes Cologne's “Klimastraße” (climate street). On this street the most important energy projects will be implemented. All facets of climate protection are taken into account: from optimal building insulation and maximum thermal efficiency to charging stations for electric vehicles and low-energy street lighting.
